The Future of Vending Machines - Gesture Technology

The Future of Vending Machines - Gesture Technology

A technology is only good when it is applied creatively.  This proposal was developed for BATJ a few years ago even before Xbox came out with KINECT.  I met some technologist from Singapore who share what they were working on and a year later I went back to them if they could actually develop a vending machine that you do not need to touch.

The proposal was presented and accepted to move on to prototype stage and we did it.  Coke came out with the first touch screen vending machine but we would have the world's first gesture vending machine.

Gesture is still at its infancy stage and there are so many very practical application, some of the more immediate ones are health related like even opening the doors to toilet or the toilet seat, taps are already sensor controlled..

Together with XYZ Technology partners, several test pilot projects was done, one was a gesture jack pot machine , a soccer goal gesture booth, a flying game.

What's next.... perhaps I am waiting for a challenging brief.

Character design for a unique town which is home to fireflies

Character design for a unique town which is home to fireflies

Nomura is developing a town area that has dedicated a park that is home to fireflies.  The water is clear there and attracts firefly breeding.

In an effort to promote this unique part of the town, they have asked for a character design of a firefly.

The design solution takes a simple form that can be executed in many ways.  The Yellow bottom half acts as a lighting, similar to the firefly itself.

The first idea is that it can be a lantern with kids carrying this lantern around the park, much like a firefly itself.  The second execution using the same design can be an LED light - small version can be string like Christmas lights and larger version of about 15cm could be use for home mood light decoration. The Third execution can be an artist collaboration version where 30cm version produced in white plastic which can be painted over and be seen with or without lighting. The customed designs can be used for events inviting from both professional to the kids living around the area. The fourth execution is naturally creating a mascot addding legs to the current design.  Of course there are also endless merchandising items that can be produced using this character.

Character design for Sogetsu

Character Design for Sogetsu

This was a challenging task as many character designs tends to be cute and fun.  This however needs to echo the sophisticated long cultural values of this traditional/contemporary Japanese art form that has a global following.

The proposed character chosen is a creation of a mythical creature - The Iris Fairy.

Iris is a flower iconic to Japan, it is elegant and beautiful. It's petals is so graceful as if it is a beautiful dress. A flower was chosen because of Sogetsu soul is to bring beauty from nature and transform it into an expressive art.  A flower or leave or branch alone is nothing until a master puts it in a context to express a feeling or message. Hence, a Japanese flower was adopted to have that linkage to the roots of it's tradition.

Why Fairy?

Simply, a fairy is like a spirit that inspires a person. Sogetsu members are like faries bringing about magical transformation of ordinary things into contemplative art forms.

The combination of Iris and Fairies echos the core values of Sogetsu and its members and it is hope that this Iris fairy will represent the soul and spirit of the art created by Sogetsu masters.
